You will always find yourself faced with the simple fact that to move forward you must adapt and change. Take a few moments and list all the great and wonderful things that have happened during your life time from sitting around and waiting for things to happens.

It this a short list or a non-existent one?

Most, if not all great movements during your life time have happened do to the fact that you made bold moves. You took grand chances. What I recommend for you is that you find a risk worth taking and go for it. There will be a thousand possible moves that will come up during the life of your business. Should you go it alone? Should you hire help? Should you market in a different way? Should you reinvent your business? Should you stick with that supplier? Should you go out and find new suppliers? Should you try new things to expand your business or stand still?

So many questions will come up. Some many great opportunities will be presented to you. I cannot tell you what to do. No one can tell you what to do. You will have to make your own choices and yes each choice will be a chance that can represent success and or failure. That is the funny part about life. Nothing we do that is worth doing comes with a promises of success. Politicians promise you that if you vote for them they will make everything all right and of course the other guy will make everything all wrong. They are professional liars. I am just a professional business man and the only promise that I can make you is that if you do not take chances with your online business then you will not grow it. It will never become that business that supports your life style, that supports you family and allows you to live a better a richer life.

This is the part where I am supposed to ask you to go out a buy my book and or sign up for my course. I have a book, but I am not here to sell it. I will only suggest that you review all the good ideas that you have been sitting on. Find the one that is the lowest risk and try it. If it involves free trials and the chance to opt out all the better. Just try something new and take the time to pat yourself on the back for how far you have come.
Sometimes we forget to be thankful for the small improvements that we have made along the way. Be thankful for the small growth in our businesses.

Catch your breath. See a movie. Read a book. Spend time with a friend or a family member that you have not seen in a while. To quote Charles Dickens at this time of year “Mankind should be our business.”

Did you hear me? The customers. These people are the one thing that no business can do without and all business must seek to add more and more of them.

Your customers are what will make your online business the thing that will provide for you and your family. These people are gold to you and should be treated as such. Your customers have to be first located. Once located they must be treated well and made to feel as welcome as possible. Then these customers must be held on to at all cost. The easiest sale you will ever make is to a repeat customer. They know you and what products and or services you can provide. They will be happy to spend more money with you if you treat them well.

Identify repeat customers. Keep a list of them and stay in contact with them as must as possible.

The customer is king and you are there to serve them. They pay not only the bills that keep your business up and running, but your home as well. Keep that in mind when you obtain a new customer. Never look away from that fact when you are in contact with an existing customer.

In other words keep your eyes on the prize. Your online business grows only because of the customers that you are able to find and keep.

Doing Business As A Professional

Ask yourself what type of business person that you are? What type of online business do you wish to run? How do you want the world to see you?

Someone who works through the hard times?

Someone who works even harder when things are going well?

Someone who adds new elements to their business even when business is booming?

Doing these things are nothing more than doing what a professional is supposed to do. You are a pro at what you do. You have to tell yourself everyday that this is not a hobby, but a profession. Treat each and everyday like that and sooner or later you will see yourself as a professional.

Look at the athletes and performs that you admire. Usually this admiration is fueled by not only their natural skills, but their behavior as well. How do they conduct business when few are paying attention? How you have heard that they are the first person at the training faculty and the last one to leave. How they study and a work harder than any one else. How they play the game the same way whether they are up by twenty points or down by twenty.

Be a professional when no one is looking. Give your best effort at all times.

Cheer yourself up by looking at new ways to grow you business. Find new ways to interact with your customer base. It will not be easy to start something new. It will be difficult at first, but all things are difficult at first. I promise you that over time you will get better at it.

Again I will suggest expanding your business with email marketing. If you can build a list of existing customers and keep in contact with them then you are going to make more money in the long run. Think about it this way. Who is the best possible customer? Those whom have already purchased a product or a service from you already. If you have provided a good product or a great service then you have a customer ready to return. We all return to stores that we are comfortable in. We all eat at those restaurants that have provided quality services in the past.

To better insure that you do not have another truly bad day at the office then I would suggest getting to know your existing customers better.

Think about it. You are your own boss and most likely your only employee so at the end of this day all of the credit belongs to you. Yes, I know that when we fail we know who to blame, but even under those circumstances it is far easier to deal with your own mistakes than those of others. You know what you did wrong so you know how to correct those mistakes. It does not take a meeting. It does not take a memo. It does not take hours of finger pointing. You know how to correct it and move on. You know this during the good and the bad times. You know what is best for your business and if you do not you at least know where to go to get the help you need.

I would like to suggest some things to you that might aid your business. Most of us got into the business that we are in hoping that it would grow over time. Who starts a business and says to themselves I want to reach this certain level and stop right there. Who does not want to grow and improve and make more profit?

What I would like to suggest to some of you who are running an online business is that this may be the time to look into adding services.

If you do not have a website why not? If you are earning a living by working at one of the online marketplaces you are still an employee of someone else. Sure Ebay and Amazon will not put it that way, but they can stop you from running your business on their sites any time that they wish. That sounds like having a boss to me.

Also you should think about collecting information about your customer base so that you can go back to them again and again. You will need a service to do that for you unless you have many free hours on your hands.

I forgot that some of you are here for the first time. That some of you do not have your business off the ground yet. You are just getting started.

Do not worry, it is not that difficult to start an online business or service. You do it the way most things are done, one step at a time. You figure out what you want your business to do for you and what it will take for that business to provide this.

If it is a regular cash flow or long term security it will be up to this business to do that for you.

You are going to need a base of operations. Some place to hang up an open for business sign. Online we do this at an existing website or at our own website. If you are starting out I would suggest that you use sites like Ebay or Amazon or Ebid to learn the basics. And then move on to building your own site.

Why do I need a site of my own?

Because it is yours. You own it. You can not be removed from it or fired from it or suspended from it. You can not have the rules change on you because you set the rules of operation there. You will not have to pay sellers fees at your own site. You will not have to compete with others undercutting your prices at your own site.

How do I build my own site? They are difficult to put together. I can barely turn on a my computer.

I understand. It took me almost two years to learn all that I needed to learn before I built this site. Now I teach others. You can visit the DIY section of this site and follow the tutorials there. It is so much easier than you think.

You can do it the old fashion way. That way is just to go out and do it. Trial and error. You will make mistakes. You will fail more than you succeed.

You will want to quit a few dozen times if you are lucky, but at the end of the day if you are willing to grind it out you might make it.

Yes, that is what I just said. You might make it. I will not promise you that you will make it because no one except God can do that. All I can say that if you keep trying and keep learning as you go you will be giving yourself a great chance at success. You most likely will reach your goals if you keep moving forward. The one promise that I can make you is that if you do nothing and wait for the business that you wanted and the freedom that you desire to fall into your lap it will never happen. In the real world you have to hustle for it. You have to do the grunt work. You have to make it happen.

We are in the middle of the summer movie season and the film industry has a certain way of doing business. They build their industry around what is called tent poles films. If everything else fails the profit that these movies bring in will keep the massive studios going. They are The Avengers, Spiderman, Men in Black, Batman and the Pixar films. These tent pole movies are their go to products.

What are your tent pole items? What are your go to products? What makes your online store tick? What keeps your online business afloat even when everything else is going bad?

If you need help I would suggest business and or trade magazines. Yeah, actual magazines still exist and in this area they can be very useful. Two years ago I was sitting in a doctor’s office and I picked up a beat up copy of a website magazine. Two years later I have two websites and seven blogs of my own. I wish that someone had told me about websites and the power of SEO years ago. What I am trying to say is that you will never know until you try it what resource will be the right one for you.

Good for you, but I heard you say Amazon and Ebay. At the end of the day you are working for their business and not the other way around. Hey, I understand. I use to think that way. Now I use Amazon and Ebay as a resource to market and promote my own websites. They exist to act as a portal by which customers are introduced to the services that I offer. I refuse to depend upon them. Those companies could crash and burn, nothing is too big to fail and what if one or both decides to suspend my account or review it. This could put my business on hold for weeks or even months. This has happened to many business due to no fault of their own. A few days without a steady income can damage a small business. A few weeks can destroy it. Having your own website is very important. It is at the end of the day your own brand. My brand is cannonexcel7, I promote it each and everyday. If I treat it well my brand will help me to retire comfortably within the next ten years.
